Event

Birdwatching the Sierra Loja in Granada Province

Date

WEDNESDAY – 7 June 2017

Meeting Point

Arbades Service Station on A92 above Loja (north side travelling towards Granada)

Time

9:30 h. – 17.00 h.

Leader of the day

Bob Wright

Directions to the meeting point
Take A92 motorway towards Granada from Malaga/Sevilla direction.  If leaving own car to share a lift up the mountain, park in the covered area below the car park immediately outside the entrance to the restaurant/toilets.
Information about the meeting

Once we are assembled we will try to take as few cars as possible up the Sierra Loja.  Slow drive to the top checking out woodland birds including tits, magpies, warblers and Red-legged partridges.  A stop at the lower quarry should produce Black Wheatear and Black Redstart along with first sightings of hirrundines, swifts, Chough and Jackdaw.  Maybe a raptor or two and check if the Eagle Owls are on view.
The journey on upwards to and above the tree-line should produce both Northern and Black-eared Wheatear along with both Crested and Thekla Lark, little Owl, Rock Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush  and Hoopoe.  We might even see Montagu’s Harrier below us or a Bonelli’s Eagle.
Once at the top we are in Rock Thrush country, are prime target.  We should also be able to guarantee Rock Sparrow and some small passerines.  Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagle are also often seen.

Itinerary
As soon after 9.30 as possible we will start the ascent (watch out for Crossbill and Spotted Flycatcher on the lower slopes).  Once on the top we will stop for our picnic lunch, probably about 1pm near the pond at Charco del Negro.
Then it is search for the Rock Thrush utilising both main tracks before making our way back down the mountain and, if necessary, calling in for a quick check on the Eagle Owl site if we miss the bird on the way up.

Accommodation in the area

No affiliated members in the area but if you want to stay overnight ion the Tuesday then I think accommodation is available at the Service Station – but no idea of price, etc.

Clothing and food
At this time of the year it may get quite warm. So, you should bring sun screen, hat, comfortable clothes and walking shoes.  It can be windy on top so extra care with the possibility of sunburn.

We’ll eat our lunch in the field, so bring your own food and water.

Possible birds
As previously described above.  There is a good chance of many Warblers including Sardinian, Subalpine, Spectacled, Dartford, Whitethroat, Bonelli’s and Firecrest.  Tits include Great, Blue, Coal, Long-tailed and Crested.
