April Field Visit: Saturday 15 April (Easter Saturday) at 9.30

Ventas de Zafarraya and El Robledal

Leader: Bob Wright

For those working off the “Hot Cross Buns” and preparing for “Easter Eggs” a walk along the old railway track above Ventas de Zafarraya on the Malaga/Granada border followed by the short drive up to the woods of El Robledal.

Meet at the mirador at Ventas de Zafarraya at 9.30 and then a walk up and through the old railway tunnel before returning to the cars. We should then be able to share transport up to the woods of El Robledal before returning to the mirador at the end of the meet. But please note that you will not only need to bring liquid and picnic but there are only two toilet opportunities, at the venta immediately below the bridge at Ventas de Zafarraya and a second venta as we leave the main Granada road to take the track up to El Robledal. The start of the walk is in the shade so it can be cold(ish) for the walk between mirador and tunnel.

The cliffs to the right hold breeding Chough and Peregrine and there should be a very good opportunity to see both Black Wheatear and Blue Rock Thrush along with Crag Martins, Black Redstart and many small passerines plus the chance of passing Griffon Vulture, Bonelli’s, Booted and Golden Eagle. A site where anything or nothing can turn up. Up to El Robledal and we should find Nuthatch, Short-toed Treecreeper, Hawfinch, Chaffinch, most of the Tit family other than Penduline, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker along with Jay and Mistle Thrush.

Directions:

From the coast at Torre del Mar take the A356 inland towards Alcaucin, La Vinuela, Alhama de Granada, etc and stay on this road till you meet the provincial border at the top of the winding hill. After about 10km from the motorway the road splits and you need to keep right for Alcaucin and Alhama de Granada so that you DO NOT CROSS the La Vinuela reservoir. The road, now the A402, then drops down with lake on your left and you reach traffic lights. This is the start of the hill that leads to the meeting point. As soon as you pass under the old railway bridge at the top turn immediately left (within 10 metres) and take the track up to the railway line where you will find the mirador and car park.

If travelling from Sevilla direction on A93 leave at Casabermeja and follow directions for Velez Malaga on A356. After about 35km you will cross the La Vinuela reservoir and immediately turn right to meet up with the road towards La Vinuela and Alhama de Granada. Very quickly you will come to the traffic lights and then follow route as above.

If approaching from Granada, follow directions towards Alhama de Granada and then take country road on right as you leave town and next to new fire station. Stay on this road till you reach Ventas de Zafarraya and then trough village, past petrol station and you will see railway bridge immediately in front of you and track entrance on right leading up to mirador.
