Making plans for a longish visit in September and I wondered what the situation at the Laguna de Tarelo is at present. Whe we visited at the same time last year it was very quiet and, in particular, there were no WH Ducks present. We were told later that there had been a problem with seepage of saline water into the laguna which had caused the problem.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Hi Alf!

Just picked up your query on the Forum.  Unable to give you any specifics and most of the committee and many others seem to be away in foreign parts (to Spain!) at the moment.  However, I visited back in February or so and the water was distictly red as if some pollutant had entered.  Needless to say, very few birds about nevermind the Marbled Duck that we had hoped to see.  However, even if this lagoon is "emprty" there is much to be seen in this very popular (for waders) area.  Whilst in the area check out the seafront near the lighthouse at Chipiana (Not sure of spelling) for the resident Little Swifts.

If you are visiting fo rthe first time I suggest you get a cpy of Andy Paterson's "Where to watch birds in Southern Spain".  Now on its third edition but the main difference between editions is an update to road numbers and direction, etc.  Having said that, no sooner was the third edition published than all the local road numbers were change once again!!  You should be able to get hold of a used edition for a couple of pounds through Amazon; worth a try anyway.

Have a safe journey over and lots of good birding.  Remember we are down at Tarifa/La Janda later in the month.

Best wishes
