Title: Field meeting for March 2017
Post by: Franky no Hair on February 09, 2017, 06:15:15 pm
Event: Andalucia Birding Society visit to Cabo de Gata, Almeria

Date: Saturday 18 March 2017 Meeting Point: Meet at 9.30 outside the first hide as you approach the village. It will be on a bend on your left with a large gravelled area in front. Leader for the day: Bob Wright Directions to the meeting point:- Take A7 to east of Almeria and follow exit sign to “Cabo de Gata”. Right at exit roundabout and the right at next towards Retamar. Well labelled and once you exit the last roundabout it is a straight road down to the junction for San Jose. (BE ARARE THAT THERE ARE ACTIVE SPEED CAMERAS ON THIS ROAD!) You bear right, old fishing boat on right, and through the small village of Pujaire. You will see the meeting point as you approach Cabo de Gata itself. Accommodation in the area: Hotel Blanca Brisa almost opposite the meeting point, on your right as you enter the village. Lovely rooms including breakfast and probably costing about €52 double and €35 single. Check out “Booking.com” for current prices and best deals. Not so good for an early bar and meals good but late. Last year we found a great little restaurant a couple of kms back up the road in Pujaire.

Information about the meeting

Very much the same as the past three years with, I suspect, most staying at the local hotel almost immediately opposite the meeting place. A great opportunity to spend time with friends and socialise in the evening. What to see? Lots of Flamingos and waders, especially Godwits and look out for Curlew and Stone Curlew as you make your way from the roadside to the hides, especially the two nearest the village. February is a good month for migrating Dotterel and this year they were seen close to the village towards the beach near the old tower. Are they still there? Another speciality is wintering Trumpeter Finches; think fat House Sparrows with a dull, thick red beak and a hint of pink on the chest. I have usually seen them near the public hide, last on left as we travel out, or on the cliffs and grassland near the lighthouse. This is a visit where we need to try and fill cars and so prevent a long convey. In addition, during the morning, members can go on ahead or hang back to gain more space and then we check everyone is OK when we meet at the lighthouse about midday and stop for a coffee at a bar near the coast between about 1.30 and 2pm. This will be a short comfort break for the ladies, assuming, if desperate, the men may have already taken the necessary remedy! It would also enable folks to buy a sandwich if they do not have a packed lunch. We do not stop for a “formal” lunch break and so miss the birding time. After this break we drive along the track west from the town to the rambla so that we can explore the river mouth, probably a lagoon rather than a clean break to the sea. Look out for Slender Gulls here. There are six distinct birding areas: 1. The public hides (4) overlooking the salinas (still working at the far end)

2. The shore itself, either on the way out or back; Gannets and Shearwaters 3. The lighthouse area overlooking the sea; Shags and sea birds, Trumpeter Finch? 4. The inland road near the light house which should produce mountain birds 5. A small hide (H5) at the back of the salina – one-way track. 6. The truncated river to the west of the village.

I will bring basic sketch maps to distribute to participants so that we do not need to travel in convoy. This is a “restrictive” site so we will be forever coming across each other during the day and most will have mobiles, radios, etc if we need to pass on news re special birds discovered, etc. But mainly, enjoy yourselves and let’s hope we see lots of great birds, especially Trumpeter Finches. Bob Wright
