Post by: Bob Wright on January 13, 2018, 07:57:14 pm
Special offer to ABS members for a private tour to El Chorro on Thursday 25 January

“Bird-walking” trip to El Chorro (Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes Nature Reserve - Malaga)

January is a good moment to watch the vultures as they are refurbishing their nests and making display “synchronized” flights. Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles are also starting their mating season so chances are higher to find them.

The trip consists on a walk up to the “Mirador (viewpoint) de las Buitreras (place where the vultures nest)”, stunning scenery!, just above the Caminito del Rey, where we can have good views of Griffon Vultures and even Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles. The path starts in a pine tree forest where we can spot Common Crossbill, Crested Tit and Firecrest, and goes on through a Mediterranean scrub area hosting Rock Bunting, Dartford Warbler, Black Wheatear and Blue Rock Thrush.

Length of the path: 4 km return.
Difficulty: low, we keep the pace slow by looking and hearing around for birds; good trail, last 300 m. a bit more rugged. Not recommended for non-walkers!

Timing: any time of year.

Meeting point: Restaurante Hostal El Cruce (Ardales)
Meeting time: 8:00, to be back at around 12:30

Price: 35€/person (minimum 4) plus 10€ per each extra person (maximum 8). Total amount to be shared among the whole group! Transportation not included.
