This is a great opportunity for members to visit a most beautiful part of Andalucia (Cabo de Gata) and I was there a couple of days ago and found the specialist bird of the area, Trumpeter Finch, along with a wonderful array of birds inluding Black Wheatear, Dartford Warbler, Curlew and Golden Plover. You can usually find the odd Stone Curlew or two if you look carefully.  Also a good site for Audouin's Gull and resting terns including Common, Little and Sandwich -but as always with birding, no guarantees.  Gannets off the coast.  My choice of hotel is the Blanca Brisa Hotel which is almost opposite the meeting place for Cabo de Gata and gives the opportunity for a quick look round on the Saturday evening and/or an early morning walk across the road to check out the nearest water.  Roquetas and Las Norias usually turn up a collection of ducks, including the occasional Marbelled Duck and/or Ferruginous Duck along with many Great Crested Grebes, a range of Herons and Purple Swamphen.

Meeting directions are also given in the latest (January) magazine.  For Saturday in Roquetas de Mar, the meet is alongside the large fresh-water lake near the entrance to the salinas.  On Sunday, the meeting point is at the first hide, on the right-hand bend as you approach the village (large gravel car park in front).

Unfortunately, I fly to Tokyo on the same day so for the first time will miss this occasion, one  of my favoutite ABS visits.

Garry, your leader for these two days, is a local birder of great experience and will be a wonderful guide for those attending (see

Hotel prices at Blanca Brisa are usually about 55 Euros per night (for 2) and includes breakfast and free WiFi.  But keep an eye on as they often have deals offering a discount.

Please remember to keep Garry up to date by using the Forum to indicate your attendance, especially if only attending for one of the days.
