Hello Andalusia!
I will visit your area April 13-20 (together with family, but I will do at least 2 days of birding).
How about the species Subalpine warbler (Sylvia inornata), Melodious warbler (Hippolais polyglotta) and Western Orhean Warbler (Sylvia hortensis); are they regular or very difficult in the area? I´m interested both in breeding sites and roosting sites near the coast/good area for nocturnal migrants)! We will stay near Nerja and I will have a car (driving 1 hour is no problem).

And number 2: Are there any good hides for wetland bird photography in the Nerja-Malaga-Granada area? (I´m generally more interested in waders and warblers than white egrets)

Thx for any help and advice!

Mattias

I had Subalpine Warbler yesterday morning at the Rio Torrox just above the Opal garage.  I would suggest the Guadalhorce "estuary" reserve in Malaga (very close to the airport in Guadalmar)  for the use of hides overlooking water and giving a good chance for waders.  Also. check out the Charca de Suarez on the western outskirts of Motril, about 30 minutes east on the motorway.  Wardened site and limited opening times in April due to the breeding Red-knobbed Coots.  Best to go on either Saturday or Sunday and be there when the gate is unlocked at 10 am.  Normally left open fro 9 till 1pm but march - May inclusive  only open at 10 and 11.30 for admission (free) then locked until departure.  Once you make yourself known should be no problem to stay on site till closure at 12.30 or 1pm, not sure which.

Another option is to take the family for a morning out to Fuente de Piedra so that they an look at the many Flamingos.  Might just get away with that if your wife is in a good mood!!!!!

have a great holiday and successful birding.

Thx a lot for feedback Bob! I will try Rio Torrox. Do you think this is a roosting site or breeding site for subalpine warbler (I dont know what the habitat looks like there)?

And it seems you know my family well, I´ve already promised wife/kid pink flamingos and icecream at Fuente de Peidra, which they agreed upon! The hardest part will be to convince them to leave at 5 am!
At Fuente de Piedra, is it best light in the morning or in the afternoon? I noticed the wisitor center is just east of the lake. Is it possible to walk/drive around the entire lake? (I didn´t find this information at the web page).

And thx for good infomation on Charca de Suarez! (I had missed this site until know, but will try it!)
