Where to watch birds in Southern & Western Spain (3rd Edition)
by Ernest Garcia & Andrew Paterson

Publisher: Christopher Helm / A & C Black
ISBN: 978-0-7136-8315-8

The area covered by Garcia and Paterson, within their definitive guide to finding birds in Southern and Western Spain, is both vast and diverse; producing a real challenge to the authors. Covering Extremadura and Andalucia (as well as Gibraltar), I am sure, will have created a dilemma on which sites to omit and what sites to include. It is such an important and rich region for birds, that to produce a comprehensive site list would involve several volumes! Their revised and updated 3rd edition includes an extra nine major birding sites as well as updating maps for all 200 plus sites.

The layout of the book is orderly and concise, making its use a welcome and easy read and source of reference when travelling in the region. Each site is well described with route maps, bird species likely to be encountered and an at-a-glance calendar giving the times of year when sought after species can be seen. It is particularly helpful, that in addition to route maps, the authors have included useful text on how best to approach various bird sites. Rather than distract the reader with glossy photographs of the region and birds, the book includes some beautiful line drawing by Stephen Message and these serve to compliment the value of this guide.

Whether visiting or residing in this region, Garcia and Paterson’s guide will provide the avid birder with endless possibilities to explore this most remarkable and important area. I thoroughly recommend purchasing a copy either as a reference or for those planning to visit.

To put it more simply, it makes no sense whatsoever if you visit the area and call yourself a birdwatcher (or whatever term you prefer) not to get this book.  Got the old one?  The new info in this edition is well worth  the minimal cost,
