A wild male lynx has died in Doñana

Marjoram, a six-year lynx was the only male born into freedom in Doñana, which was part of the captive breeding program, has died of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as reported this afternoon in a statement from the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía.

With the death of this lynx there are now six who have died of this disease, whose origin has been associated with a vitamin supplement that was provided to individuals in captivity, as Almoradux another male the most recent male has died of CKD Ecological Arcex, Chrome , Hook and Cascabel.

Almoradux died at the breeding center of El Acebuche (Doñana), where technicians of the captive breeding program had to put down the male without physical pain after establishing that it could not maintain a minimum quality of life.

The Ministry of Environment has reported that the lynx Marjoram did breed in captivity and fathered two males and a female.

This breeding program is awaiting analytical results, the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucia, have commissioned various research centres to elucidate on the ultimate cause of the ERC, the statement said.

It is estimated that CKD affects a little over thirty of the seventy appointed to the Iberian lynx captive breeding program, nine of whom remain in critical condition.
