FIELD MEETING - ALMERIA
February 25th, 2012

Briefing:

We´ll visit the Natural Park of “Sierra Maria – Los Velez” looking for birds across different habitats such as forest, steppe and crop fields.
With the direct collaboration of the Natural Park, we´ll also visit  the “birds recovery center” inside the Park, allowing us to witness griffons feeding  in a special feeding-place (muladar).

Timing: (approx)
09:00   Coffee break and meeting point in Velez Blanco.
09:45   Griffons watching in “El Muladar”.
11:00   Private visit to “La Almohalla” Birds Recovery Center.
12:30    Lunch time; packed lunch bring your own.
13:00   Forest habitat.
15:30   Steppe habitat.
18:00   End of the trip.

Requirements:

Please, consider that we are travelling to a cold area, so it is highly recommended to carry with you winter cloths and appropriate shoes for muddy/wet conditions underfoot. Snow is also possible for this date in the area.
NOTE: It is very important to arrange transport in the area in 4x4 vehicles, so please be prepared to share transport if you have a 4x4 with fellow members.

Birds species in the area:

Because the presence of snow and changing weather conditions, it is difficult to talk about species we will see, but your guide will do his best to point out the birds of the area. The characteristics of this trip will allow us to watch big raptors, including griffon vultures.

Hi everyone.
Sorry to be silent for such a long time, but work requires me actually.
Happy to collaborate once more with the ABS and to drive you across Almeria lands. I am preparing everything on this trip to Los Velez area, in the best way I am able; if everything runs fine, it will be a great day to all people coming to it.
From Almeria, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU.
Jesus Contreras

I send you a pic of today of a small friend.

Hi Jesus,

Jan and I would like to come on this field trip, but as usual we will only be in  a little SmartCar. Like last year we will therefore be dependent on being able to find a couple of spare seats in a 4x4.

Can we share with you again as we did last year please?

Like Valerie, I would like to know exactly where in Velez Blanco we are to meet - if at all possible Latitude and Longitude (to put into my GPS) would be absolutely ideal, and for me much better than a descriptive narrative.

We presume your Cabo de Gata field day will be similar to last year so will give that a miss, but we would be very interested to know more about your Almeria Wetlands trip on the Monday. Where will you meet for that please and what area will is cover?

Thanks

Barrie

Sorry to be late, Barry. GPS position is 37º41´16.04´´ - 2º05´41.84´´. This position comes from my Google Earth. Please make sure it coincide with the entrance of a village named VELEZ BLANCO.
About the meeting point it will in HOTEL VELAD AL-ABYHAD (time to be determined) that is placed just in this GPS position.
About car, do not worry. We´ll look for solutions. Mine is nearly full by the moment... but we´ll adjust everything on the day before.
For the two trips, Cabo de Gata will be different, running from the other side of the Park, across the steppe, looking for little bustards and sand grouses (always difficult to be seen, as you know) and the other one runs also in new places for you. For this second trip, we´ll meet near to Almeria town and we´ll visit Adra lagoon (restricted hyde), Punta Entinas reserve, Cañada de las Norias and Cerrillos abandoned saltpans.
We have time enough for preparing everything. I am going up to Los Velez next week to ultimate all details.
Are in touch and thanks for your post.

By the moment we are 7 people joined to this field trip.
I want to say that I am, as at last year, placing personally all my efforts for preparing a good field trip. It has been extremely difficult to get permits for a visit to the recovery center, so as to put in order timings about the date for griffons feeding can coincide with our day trip. Possibly it will be impossible to do this for a future.
More details on the next days.
All the best

Jesus

Hi Brenda et al. Thanks for your post.

I did know nothing about Ellie and Bob. VERY WELCOME...

Then actually we are 10 people, including my guests. Very possibly will come with us the director of the park, that is a good friend of mine... and of course, it is yet open to other people.

Looking forward to meet all of you, and very welcome to ALMERIA LANDS. Working here for a good field trip, as last year. :)

Hi Jesus,

thank you for the location. With that it was very easy to find the Hotel in Street View of Google Earth (see attachment).

We will stay in our motorhome down in the valley, just the other side of the motorway and a little to the west from Velez Rubio (next to Hostal Los Demelos).

We will then, on the Sunday, move to somewhere near Almería so as to come to your meet on Monday.

Could you tell me exactly where the meeting point will be please so I can use Google Earth and my GPS to search for somewhere to park over Sunday and Monday nights?

Thank you

Barrie
