Last week I heard a clear soft 'ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki' call coming from the trees in our street in Sevilla. Being busy, I quickly noted it as a lesser spotted woodpecker and didn't go out to find the bird. Back home in Belgium I checked some books and found out that lesser spotted woodpecker is quite rare in Southern Spain. Is it possible I heard a lesser spotted woodpecker and are my birding books wrong? Or was it perhaps a (migrating) wryneck? Or even some other species I didn't think of?
Can anyone comment on this? Many thanks in advance!

PS I'm familiar with lesser spotted woodpecker, not with wryneck.

Hello Alain,

Welcome to the forum!

I have been told that it was a possibility you heard the Lesser spotted woodpecker, in Sevilla. So you were probably correct.

Best wishes,

Brenda

Hello Brenda,

Thanks for the reply!
Next time I hear the call, I'll certainly try to get a look at the bird to be sure.

Kind regards,
Alain

Whilst Lesser-Spotted Woodpecker is found not too far away in Aracena, Seville is outside its Spainish range by a good few km.  As migrating Wryneck, which they would be doing at this time, could turn up anywhere then I'd guess this species is more likely.
