Title: Locations Near To Rio Almanchare
Post by: Skirge on January 15, 2016, 03:50:56 pm
Hi all
New here and looking for birding location help in the Canillas De Aceituno area about 12 k south of Alcaucin, we are on the south edge of Rio Almanchare.
Myself my wife and our daughter will be spending a week there at the end of August.
I am no birding expert but after many years doing all of all kind of photography I tired wildlife photography about a year ago and well I am hooked.
I am visually impacted and although a very strange hobby for someone with my sight I don’t let it stop me.

I would require locations as close by as possible as I obviously don’t drive and even though we will have a hire car this will be my wife’s first time driving abroad and I can’t be dragging her for miles.
The villa we have is right on the South edgeof Rio Almanchare so any locations near to there for Raptors or Owls would be greatly appreciated. Although if it has feather I shall be taking it photograph, I am a sucker for a Kingfisher if there are any around ?
I shoot at 420mm max and am REALLY hoping I can get some eagles of any type within range.
I bought myself a couple of books.. Where To Watch Birds In Southern & Western Span and also..  Finding Birds In Andalucía.
Anymore recommended reading material?
Regards   Kris

Dear Kris,

I am afraid I don't know this area at all, but there has got to be someone out there who does. Can anyone help Kris please? Bob or Luis Alberto?

Kris

Two possibilities for you may be the Rio Velez at Torre del Mar and/or the Charca de Suarez reserve as you approach Motril.  The latter is only open for restricted hours (free admission) including both Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Contact me by email at either the Society (abs.sociedad@gmail.com) or personal address at rcnwright@gmail.com including your postal address (I think I have the right Canillas!) and I can send you further details.  My house is above Lake Vinuela but am presently staying at Algarrobo Costa.

I have found reference to a Vulture Feeding Station at the foot of the Sedella mountains but trying to find an ecat location is turning out to be impossible.

This pdf states

The El Chorro experiment was
followed by another feeding point in
Ronda and Casares, and then the Junta de
Andalucía decided to extend the network
to Sedella and El Torcal.

Another vulture restaurant is the

Here it is on the map, where the "V" is. The blue  violet markings indicate a good, but very narrow asphalt road to a picnic site. It is about 1½ km west of Sedella. There is a sign higher up to the "buitrera". However, you will not find vultures there very often.

Brilliant many thanks

I guess its not a regular feeding station ? shame as it does not seen to far for us to travel

An easy place to look for griffon vultures is the old railway to Ventas de Zafarraya. You may see other birds and animals there, such as black wheatear and cabra montes.

Thanks Petrea I shall take a look on google maps so how far we are staying from there, its a shame the vulture feeding station is not used often as we are are 5.6km from it. I think I have seen the railway lines mentioned in other research I found online.

Would anyone please be able to translate this for me, online translations are not making much sense.
Its in response to me asking if the Sedella vulture feeding station is still used

Thanks

Well, you could alway try. I have only been there on Sundays lately; perhaps the chances are better on weekdays. I suspect they only use it when someone has a dead animal to dispose of.

There is an information center about the nature park in Sedella. Unfortunately, the electronic devices are not well maintained! Perhaps they know more about the feeding of the vultures.

I have plenty of time until we go but I don't think me excitement will diminish any, I see other feeding stations are a lot more active but are many hours away.

Thanks.. I guess its a good sign they have an info centre it does suggest the place should still be in use

The info center is for the nature park, not the vulture feeding place!

Ah I see thanks, just been watching some videos on the vulture feeding and the story of Manu & Leonardo, its such a shame the laws were changed it worked for many years vultures cleaning up the dead dead farm animals. I guess BSE had a lot to do with the change in the law but they show no interest in helping to save the birds they are removing the food source from.

I see nobody has volunteered to translate this so here goes:

"Hi, I`ve been there several times to see the vultures and I`ve seen about 12 flying and the hide to see them, with binoculars. I have never seen them being fed.. It`s a good route and you can climb there with ropes."

By the way, I think "Maroma" refers to the mountain on the slope of which you find the feeding station.

The coloured lines on my map indicate nice, short walking routes  (1½ or 2 h depending wher you start) - not to the summit, however!!!

Have you actually found info that it is not used any more?

No can't find any concrete info on if they still feed there or not, a youtube video from up there and I asked if he knows if they still feed there and  mike in Jerez translated his reply for me.. posted above.
